Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is observed every September as a dedicated time to raise awareness about suicide, foster open conversations about mental health, and remind those who are struggling that they are not alone. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and yet it remains one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood topics. This month serves as a critical reminder that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide and supporting the well-being of those around us.
Understanding the signs of someone in crisis can be life-saving. Common indicators may include expressions of hopelessness, withdrawal from social activities, sudden mood changes, increased use of drugs or alcohol, or talking about feeling like a burden or wanting to die. While these signs don’t always mean someone is contemplating suicide, they are strong signals that the person may need help and that’s when it’s time to check in and offer support. You don’t have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Simply being present, listening without judgment, and letting someone know they’re not alone can have a profound impact.
While September shines a spotlight on suicide prevention, this work continues all year long. Whether it’s checking in on a friend, educating yourself about mental health, volunteering, or simply sharing this message, every action counts. There is no shame in asking for professional help—in fact, it's a strong and courageous step toward healing. Together, we can create a world where compassion, connection, and hope are always within reach.
