June 27 is PTSD Awareness Day—a day dedicated to shining a light on a condition that often remains hidden in the shadows. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people around the world, yet stigma, misunderstanding, and silence continue to surround it. Today is an opportunity to educate ourselves, support those affected, and advocate for compassionate care and healing.

PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While it’s often associated with combat veterans, PTSD can affect anyone—survivors of accidents, natural disasters, abuse, violence, or any life-threatening situation. People with PTSD may experience: flashbacks or intrusive memories, nightmares or disturbed sleep, severe anxiety or emotional distress, feeling of guilt, shame or detachment. These symptoms can disrupt daily life, relationships, and one’s sense of safety and self.

Like other mental health condition, PTSD needs awareness in order to reduce stigma that prevents people from seeking help. Raising awareness can promote access to effective treatment like therapy and medication.

If you’re living with PTSD, know that your experiences are valid, and healing is possible. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You deserve support, understanding, and hope.
